It’s important to be aware that if you have been recently pregnant or if your abdominal muscles are otherwise overstretched and have poor tone, your muscles may sustain injuries and the spinal vertebrae of your lower back (the lumbar spine) may be subject to alignment problems or dysfunction related to the spinal column. Your torso and spine depend on the strength of your abdominal muscles for support, movement, and organ containment; weakness in the musculature requires that your muscles work much harder to accomplish this already complex job. It’s important to strengthen your abs, but if you’re just beginning be careful, be patient, and build up slowly.

Many of the symptoms associated with trigger points in the abdominal muscles are related to dysfunction of the digestive and genitourinary organs (the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, bladder, ovaries, uterus, and testes). Symptoms may include heartburn, bloating, indigestion, vomiting, cramps, dysmenorrhea, and urinary frequency or retention. Even if you believe that your symptoms are related to abdominal trigger points, it is important to rule out organic disease or dysfunction. See your physician for a medical evaluation prior to self-treatment. If your pain is severe and is accompanied by fever or abdominal rigidity or bleeding, see your physician immediately.
